Dhatu Pachak Yoga - Treatment from the Roots

Ayurveda, an ancient system of medicine originating in India, emphasizes the importance of maintaining a balance between the Three Doshas - Vata, Pitta, and Kapha - to ensure the stability and equilibrium of the body. Imbalance of Doshas leads to vitiation of Dushya or body tissues, which manifests as various signs and symptoms of a disease. To normalize the Doshas, it is essential to think about the Dushya, as the association of Dosha and Dushya causes the origin of a disease.

By simply identifying the Dushya, one can easily know the involvement of the Dhatu and prescribe these Pachak Yogas to the patient. Although these Pachak Yogas are traditionally consumed in the form of Kwath, they have now evolved into more convenient forms like tablets, syrups, etc., making them easier to consume in our hectic modern lifestyle.

Dhatu Pachak Yoga is an important set of Polyherbal formulations mentioned in Ayurvedic texts such as Charak Samhita and Ashtang Hridaya. These formulations are used in the treatment of various diseases.

Dhatu Pachak Yoga is composed of different herbs that help in the digestion and assimilation of the Seven Dhatus or Tissues (Rasa, Rakta, Mamsa, Meda, Asthi, Majja, and Shukra) of the body. The herbs in these formulations have a specific action on each of these Dhatus, helping in their proper metabolism and elimination of toxins. This leads to the purification and rejuvenation of the Dhatus, which in turn helps in the treatment of various diseases.

Although these Dhatu Pachak Yogas were originally mentioned in the context of Vishama Jvara, they are commonly used today not only to pacify fever but also to treat a variety of diseases related to Dhatu. For example, Rasa Pachak Yoga is used to treat various disorders like Anemia, Liver disorders, menstrual problems, Irritability, and Mood swings. Similarly, Asthi Pachak Yoga is commonly used to treat all kinds of Arthritis, Hair fall, graying of hair, etc. However, it is important to note that these formulations should only be used under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

In conclusion, these Dhatu Pachak Yogas are a boon for practitioners today as they provide a simple and effective way to treat various diseases related to Dhatu. They are a witness to the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda, which continues to provide valuable insights into maintaining good health and well-being.

The first step in the treatment of every disease is Aam Pachan, which refers to the process of digesting and eliminating undigested food particles or toxins from the body. A majority of diseases are caused due to the accumulation of Aam in the body. This Aamta may not only be at the Jatharagni level, but it can also occur at the Dhatvagni level.

Knowledge of Dhatu Pachak Yoga is essential in treating Aamta at the Dhatvagni level. These herbal formulations help in digesting and eliminating Aam from specific body tissues or Dhatus, thus restoring their balance and function. The Jwara Adhikara of Charak and Ashtang Hridaya mention various Dhatu Pachak Yoga that are tailored to target specific Dhatu.

In Ayurveda, the focus is on understanding the underlying causes of the disease and treating them, rather than just managing the symptoms. Aam Pachan and Dhatu Pachak Yoga are some of the fundamental principles of Ayurveda that promote good health and well-being by restoring the balance and harmony in the body.

The following are the Dhatu pachak yoga mentioned in Charak Samhita and Ashtang Hridaya; Indrayava (Kutaj beej), Patol patra and Katuki constitute the Santata Jvara treatment and is commonly known as Rasa pachak yoga.

Patol patra, Sariva, Musta, Patha and Katuki constitute the Satata Jvara treatment and is commonly known as Rakta pachak yoga.

Nimba patra, Patol patra, Triphala, Mridvika, Musta and Kutaj constitute the treatment of Anyedyushk Jvara commonly known as Mamsa pachak yoga.

Kiratikta, Guduchi, Chandan and Sunthi constitute the treatment of Tritiyaka Jvara, commonly known as Medo pachak yoga.

Guduchi, Amalaki and Musta (Nagarmoth) constitute the treatment of Chaturthak Jvara commonly known as Ashti majja pachak yoga.

The above-said Dhatu pachak yoga is major Tikta (Bitter) Rasa Pradhan. Although the above-said Pachak Yogas are stated in the form of Kwath (Decoction) yet along with evolution in the field of pharmacy they can be used in the form of Ghan vati, Vati, Capsule and Syrup. Tikta rasa being predominant of these Pachak Yogas is Agni Deepak, Sroto Rodha Nashak, Ruchi-kara and Jwaraghna, hence the above combinations are formulated by the Acharayas.
