About Gokshura and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Gokshura is the Sanskrit name for Tribulus terrestris, a low, spreading plant of dry, sunny ground across India, known in Gujarat as Gokharu and in Hindi as Gokhru. The name means “cow’s hoof”, after its small, hard, spiny fruit, and the plant is also called Shvadamshtra. It is the fruit that is powdered for Gokshur Powder.
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes Gokshura in the Guduchyadi Varga, and Charaka Samhita places it in the Mutravirechaniya group (Sutrasthana, Chapter 4), the herbs associated with healthy urine flow. Its classical properties are summarised below:
