About Himej Churna
Himej — also written Himeej or Himaj — is the Gujarati name for the mature, dark fruit of Terminalia chebula, the herb known across India as Haritaki and Harad. In the Gujarati raw-herb trade the dried mature fruit is often called Black Himej for its deep colour. Riddhish Herbals offers it as a 100% single-herb churna: one ingredient, milled from the fruit, with nothing added.
The label name carries a quiet piece of classical lore. Alongside Himej it reads Shivā — one of the old Sanskrit synonyms of Haritaki, meaning "the auspicious one," recorded in the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu among the herb's many names. Few products connect the everyday Gujarati word to its classical root this directly.
Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Haritaki sits at the very front of the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu's herbal section, in the Haritakyadi Varga — the catalogue literally opens with it. Classical texts give it a string of affectionate names, each describing a quality: Abhaya (the fearless), Pathya (the wholesome), Vijaya (the victorious) and Shivā (the auspicious). The Charaka Samhita counts it among the foremost Rasayana herbs, and records its principal actions as Deepana (kindling digestive fire), Pachana (aiding digestion), Anulomana (supporting the natural downward movement and easy, regular elimination) and Rasayana (rejuvenation).
There is a particularly Gujarati thread here. The Bhavaprakasha describes seven regional varieties of Haritaki, and the golden-fruited Jivanti variety is classically placed in Saurashtra, Gujarat — the very region Riddhish Herbals calls home. Classical Ayurveda also holds Haritaki to be among the few herbs carrying all five tastes except salt (lavana), which is why the texts describe it as Tridosha-balancing.
The Aaryabhishak, the Gujarati Ayurvedic compendium referenced on several Riddhish Herbals labels, likewise records Himej/Harde as a trusted household herb for daily digestive balance, gentle laxative support and a feeling of lightness.

Research and Scientific References
Terminalia chebula has attracted substantial published research. A peer-reviewed review catalogued its phytoconstituents — including tannins such as chebulagic and chebulinic acid and corilagin — and the breadth of pharmacological study the fruit has received. — (Bag et al., 2013 — Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine; PMID: 23620847)

How to Use
General traditional guidance is 1–3 g, roughly a quarter to half a teaspoon, once or twice daily — usually at night, mixed in warm water — or as directed by your Ayurvedic physician. Classical anupan options include warm water for everyday use, ghee in a Vata Rasayana context, and warm milk for rejuvenation. In the seasonal Ritu Haritaki practice the carrier changes with the season (for example, honey in spring or rock salt in the rains). Take it consistently alongside a balanced diet, good hydration and adequate rest.

If you are pregnant, lactating, taking any medication or managing a health condition, consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use. Results may vary from person to person. Frequently Asked Questions
What is Himej, and how is it different from Haritaki?
Himej (also Himeej or Himaj) is the Gujarati name for Terminalia chebula — the mature dark fruit, often called Black Himej in the raw-herb trade. Haritaki is the broader Sanskrit term for the same fruit. Botanically they are identical; Himej simply reflects the Gujarati Ayurvedic tradition.
Why does the label say "Shivā"?
Shivā, meaning "the auspicious one," is one of the classical Sanskrit synonyms of Haritaki recorded in the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, alongside Abhaya, Pathya and Vijaya. It reflects the high regard classical texts held for this fruit.
Is this Himej Churna from a certified facility?
Yes. It is manufactured for Riddhish Herbals in a GMP-, ISO 9001:2015- and HACCP-certified Ayurvedic facility under licence GA/1762. These certifications describe the manufacturing facility's quality systems.
Who manufactures Himej Powder?
Himej Powder is marketed by Riddhish Herbals and manufactured by its partner unit Panchamrut Herbals (Surat, Gujarat; Ayush Mfg. Lic. GA/1762), mirroring the licence printed on the pack.
Can I take Himej Churna without a doctor?
Himej is sold freely as a classical single-herb churna. For the right dose, timing and anupan for your constitution, guidance from an Ayurvedic physician is helpful — particularly if you take other medicines.
What are the alternate names for Himej?
Himej / Himeej / Himaj / Black Himej (Gujarati), Haritaki, Abhaya, Pathya, Shivā (Sanskrit), Harad / Harde (Hindi), Hirda (Marathi), Kadukkai (Tamil), Karakkaya (Telugu), Kadukka (Malayalam), Chebulic Myrobalan (English).
What is the recommended anupan?
Warm water for everyday use; ghee in a Vata Rasayana context and warm milk for rejuvenation. The seasonal Ritu Haritaki tradition pairs it with rock salt, jaggery, dry ginger, mishri or honey through the year.
How should I store it?
In a cool, dry place away from sunlight, in a tightly closed pack.
Has Terminalia chebula been studied scientifically?
Yes. A peer-reviewed review by Bag et al. (2013, Asian Pacific Journal of Tropical Biomedicine; PMID 23620847) summarised its phytochemistry and study literature, and a classical-pharmacology review by Sharma et al. (2019, JAIMS 4(4)) consolidated its documented actions. Results observed in study conditions, and individual results may vary.
