About Shalmali Kantak Churna
Shalmali Kantak Churna is a finely milled raw-herb Ayurvedic powder prepared from the Shalmali tree, known botanically as Bombax ceiba and commonly called the Silk Cotton Tree or Semal in Hindi. This churna combines the thorny prickles (Kantak) and the stem bark (Twak) of the tree, both of which are described in classical Ayurvedic literature for external skin preparations. It is intended for external use as a traditional lepa (paste application).
Riddhish Herbals offers this raw-herb churna in 100 g, 200 g, 500 g and 1 kg packs as part of our wider catalogue of single-herb powders. Every product is dispatched with a proper bill and selected with doctor-guided support, in line with the standards we have maintained since 2015 at our Gujarat retail stores.
Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Shalmali finds clear mention in Bhavprakash Nighantu under the Guduchyadi Varga, and the Sushruta Samhita uses the phrase Shalmali-kantaka-sadrusha pidika — eruptions on the face resembling shalmali thorns — to describe Mukhadushika (also called Yuvanpidika), the condition modern texts compare to acne vulgaris. Classical commentaries by Acharya Sushruta describe external mukhalepa preparations using both the Kantak (thorns) and the Twak (stem bark) of Shalmali. The Charaka Samhita Siddhi Sthana (10/36) also references external paste applications prepared from Shalmali bark for skin eruptions.
In Ayurvedic terms, Shalmali is described as Sheetala (coolant), Kashaya (astringent in taste), and traditionally associated with the pacification of Vata and Pitta doshas. Several Sanskrit synonyms appear across the classical texts — Kantakadhya (thorn-bearing), Mocha, Raktapushpa (red-flowered), Picchila, Sthirayu, and Tulaphala — each describing a different physical feature of the tree.
