About Shikakai and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Shikakai is the dried fruit pod of Acacia concinna, a thorny climbing shrub of Indian forests, ground into a fine powder. Its name is often read as “fruit for hair”, and long before bottled shampoo arrived, households across Gujarat and the rest of India washed their hair with it: a spoonful of the powder mixed with water, or a few pods boiled and strained, gives a soft, mild lather.
In Sanskrit Dravyaguna literature the plant is identified as Saptala, and also called Charmakasha. Its place in Indian tradition is as a hair-care herb:
- Traditional use: applied externally as a hair wash and scalp cleanser, and as a base for herbal hair packs.
- Keshya tradition: it belongs to the family of hair-care herbs, used alongside Aritha, Amla, Bhringraj, Hibiscus and Henna.
- Mild cleansing: it washes the hair without the stripped feel of a harsh detergent, which is why it has stayed in everyday use.
The gentle foam comes from saponins, natural plant compounds in the pod that behave like a mild cleanser in water. That is why Shikakai sits at the centre of the classic Indian hair-wash trio: Aritha to lather, Shikakai to wash and soften, and Amla to finish. Henna and Hibiscus powders are often added to the same paste for a weekend hair pack.
