Black Til Oil is pure black-sesame oil (Sesamum indicum) — known in Ayurveda as Krishna Tila, the sesame variety classical texts regard as the finest. A single-ingredient, antioxidant-rich oil traditionally used for skin and hair care and for warming body massage. 50 ml.

About Black Til Oil (Krishna Tila)

Not all sesame is the same. Ayurveda distinguishes white sesame (Shweta Tila) from black sesame (Krishna Tila), and the classical nighantus are clear about which they prefer. Black sesame is described as the foremost of the three — the seed carried in the highest regard for nourishing, grounding qualities.

This Black Til Oil is a single-ingredient oil pressed from black sesame seeds — 100% black-sesame oil, with nothing added. Sesame oil naturally carries lignans such as sesamol, sesamin and sesamolin, the compounds that give the oil its characteristic stability and antioxidant character. Retailed by Riddhish Herbals.

Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Classical Dravyaguna holds black sesame in particular esteem. Bhavaprakasha Nighantu and the Charaka Samhita note that among sesame types, the black (Krishna) is considered superior, the white (Shweta) middling — a distinction Ayurvedic practitioners still observe when choosing sesame for Snehana (oleation) and Taila preparations.

Sesame oil itself is the most celebrated oil in Ayurveda. The Ashtanga Hridaya (Sutrasthana, Annapana Vidhi) records it as foremost among oils, and Abhyanga — daily oil massage — is described across the classical texts as a grounding, Vata-settling practice within Dinacharya.

Research & Scientific References

The Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel, after reviewing animal and human data, assessed Sesamum indicum (sesame) seed oil as safe for cosmetic use as a skin-conditioning agent, reporting it to be neither an irritant nor a sensitiser at cosmetic-use levels. (Cosmetic Ingredient Review Expert Panel, 2011; PMID 21772026.)

A 2017 triple-blind randomised controlled trial published in Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice observed that light-pressure massage using topical sesame oil was associated with reductions in self-reported pain severity in adults with limb injuries, compared with a placebo oil, under study conditions. (Complementary Therapies in Clinical Practice, 2017; Iranian Registry of Clinical Trials.)

Massage a small amount into the scalp and through the hair. Leave for 30–60 minutes, or overnight, then wash.

For body massage (Abhyanga)

Warm the oil and apply with long strokes along the limbs and gentle circular motions over the joints. Rest a short while, then bathe with warm water.

For external use. Discontinue if irritation occurs.

Who Can Use It

Suitable for adults seeking a pure single-ingredient oil for skin and hair care and self-massage. Especially appreciated by those with dry skin or a Vata constitution. If you are pregnant, lactating, managing a skin or health condition, or applying it to a child, consult your physician first. Do a patch test before first use on sensitive skin.
