About Sarsav Tail (Pure Mustard Oil)

Sarsav Tail is pure mustard seed oil — known in Sanskrit as Sarshapa Taila, in Hindi as Sarson ka Tel, and in Gujarati as Sarsav Tel. Riddhish Herbals Sarsav Tail is a single-ingredient classical Ayurvedic oil made from 100% Brassica campestris (field mustard) seed oil, referenced in the classical text Aaryabhishak. It is traditionally used across India for Abhyanga (Ayurvedic oil massage), scalp and hair care, and warming application to tired joints and muscles. Net volume 100 ml. For external use only.

Mustard oil is one of the oldest external-use oils described in Indian household and classical Ayurvedic practice. Prepared in the traditional Taila spirit, this oil is presented free from artificial fragrance and adulteration, in the honest, label-true form Riddhish Herbals is known for.

Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

In classical Dravyaguna, Sarshapa (mustard) is described as Katu (pungent), Ushna (warming in potency) and Tikshna (penetrating) — qualities that underpin its long-standing role as a warming massage medium. This product follows the classical reference cited on its label, Aaryabhishak, a respected compendium of practical Ayurvedic preparations.

The wider classical literature reflects the same tradition. Charaka Samhita groups Sarshapa Taila among the Ushna Tailas favoured for Vata-related external care, while Ashtanga Hridayam notes mustard oil as an Abhyanga medium suited to cold seasons and Kapha-Vata constitutions. Bhavaprakasha Nighantu records Sarshapa among the pungent, warming dravyas. Across regional traditions — from Punjab to Gujarat to Bengal — mustard oil has also been valued as a Keshya (hair-supporting) oil for scalp massage.

  • No additives, no preservatives, no artificial fragrance. For external use only.

How to Use

Abhyanga (full-body massage): Warm the oil slightly by standing the bottle in warm water. Apply to the body with long, even strokes before bathing. Rest for 15–20 minutes, then bathe with warm water. Mornings suit this practice well.

Scalp & hair massage: Work 1–2 teaspoons through the scalp and hair lengths with the fingertips for 5–10 minutes. Leave for 30 minutes or overnight, then wash. Two to three times a week is a common routine.

Joint & muscle area: Warm the oil and massage gently into the chosen area with circular strokes to support comfort and ease. Use as directed by your Ayurvedic practitioner. For external use only — do not consume.

Who Can Use It

Suitable for adults seeking a traditional external massage oil for body, scalp and hair. Do a patch test first if your skin is sensitive. If you are pregnant, lactating, or managing any skin or health condition, consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use. Not recommended for newborn or infant massage without practitioner guidance — see the note below. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety Information & Research Note

For external use only. Do not ingest. Patch-test on a small area before full use, avoid contact with eyes and broken skin, and discontinue if irritation occurs. Store away from children.

An honest note on newborn massage: Mustard oil has been studied as a traditional newborn-massage practice in South Asia. Published research — including Darmstadt et al. (2002, Acta Paediatrica, PMID 12113324) and a community-based randomised trial in Nepal (Summers et al., 2020, BMC Pediatrics, PMID 31870338) — examined its effect on the skin barrier and advises caution on the delicate skin of newborns and infants, where gentler oils are generally preferred. For this reason we recommend practitioner guidance for any infant use. Results observed in study conditions. Individual results may vary.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, protected from direct sunlight. Keep the cap tightly closed after use. Best used within the shelf life printed on the label.
