Ganthoda Powder (Pippalimool Churna) is the dried, ground root of Piper longum — long pepper — a pure single-herb powder — root only, 50 g. In Sanskrit the root carries its own name, Pippalimool, to distinguish it from Pippali, the fruit of the same plant.

Gujarat has used Ganthoda for generations, both in winter kitchens and in classical Ayurvedic practice. This pack is one ingredient only — Piper longum root, with nothing added.

About Ganthoda Powder (Pippalimool Churna)

Ganthoda is the warming digestive root of long pepper. Where Pippali is the fruit, Pippalimool is the root — a distinct dravya with its own classical place. Riddhish Herbals offers it as a clean single-herb churna, milled in a quality facility, and has supplied genuine Ayurvedic products across India since 2015.

Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Classical Ayurvedic literature places Pippalimool among the warming digestive roots. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, in its Haritakyadi Varga, describes it as katu (pungent) and ushna (heating), with deepana and pachana qualities — the kindling of digestive fire and the support of healthy metabolism. The Charaka Samhita references the root in formulations aimed at kapha–vata balance and abdominal comfort. Because it is heating by nature, classical authors recommend it with care for those of pitta constitution.

Research & Scientific References

Researchers have studied Piper longum in the context of digestion and metabolism. A 2025 chapter published by Springer Nature examined the root specifically as a source of pseudoalkaloids and alkamides, noting its distinct phytochemistry from the more commonly studied fruit. (Guar & Shanker, 2025 — Springer Nature) Earlier work observed that dietary pungent principles such as piperine influenced digestive enzyme activity under study conditions. (Platel & Srinivasan, 1996 — International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition.) No PubMed record was opened for either source while preparing this page, so no identifier is asserted; read the literature directly: Google Scholar — Piper longum root.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Ganthoda the same as Pippalimool?

Yes. Pippalimool is the Sanskrit name for the root of Piper longum, and Ganthoda is what Gujarat has called it for generations. Hindi says Pipramul or Pipla mool, Marathi Pimpalmul, Tamil Thippili ver, Telugu Pippallu veru — the Tamil and Telugu forms literally append their word for root.

What is the difference between Ganthoda and Pippali (Lindi Piper)?

Ganthoda is the root; Pippali is the fruit — of the same long pepper vine, and they are separate drugs in classical Ayurveda with separate entries. The root is katu and frankly ushna, valued as a deepana-pachana warming digestive; the fruit is milder in potency and carries the rasayana reputation. If your recipe or your physician says Pippali or Lindi Piper, you want the fruit — this pack is the root.

Is Ganthoda a spice or a medicine?

In Gujarat, honestly, both — and there is no contradiction. It appears in classical Ayurvedic formulations as Pippalimool and in Gujarati winter kitchens as ganthoda, most familiarly in the winter preparations made with gum, ghee and dry ginger. The same root, used two ways, which is quite normal for the warming dravyas.

How much should I take, and with what?

As directed by your Ayurvedic physician. Traditionally a quarter to a half teaspoon of the churna after meals with warm water, or prepared as a light kwath. Warm water or honey is the classical anupan, chosen to suit the individual. It is a heating root, so small quantities are the tradition.

Who should be careful with it?

Anyone of pitta constitution, and anyone prone to acidity or with sensitive digestion — this is one of the more frankly heating roots in the range and classical authors flag it. Not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding except under qualified Ayurvedic supervision. Mention it to your physician if you are on any regular medication.

Why is the root sold separately from the fruit?

Because they are not interchangeable. The root has its own phytochemistry — published work notes pseudoalkaloids and alkamides distinct from the much better-studied fruit — and its own classical indications. Selling one as the other, which happens in the market, gives the customer a different medicine from the one they asked for.

Has Pippalimool been studied scientifically?

Less than the fruit, which is worth saying plainly. The research section above cites a 2025 book chapter examining the root specifically as a source of pseudoalkaloids and alkamides, and earlier work on how dietary pungent principles influenced digestive enzyme activity under study conditions. Neither is a clinical trial of this product. Individual results may vary; consult your Ayurvedic physician before use.

Is this AYUSH or GMP certified?

The churna is milled in a facility holding GMP, ISO 9001:2015 and HACCP certification — a statement about the facility, not a health claim about the product. Any AYUSH Standard Mark appears on the physical pack, and we state such marks only where they are verified on the pack itself.

How should I store it?

In a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, with the pack tightly closed. The root is aromatic and pungent; both fade with exposure to air, light and warmth, so a jar left open on a kitchen shelf loses character faster than you would expect.

Is it available at Riddhish Herbals?

Yes — Ganthoda Powder 50 g is in stock at riddhishherbals.com and at our Gujarat retail stores, with pan-India delivery, a proper bill and doctor-guided selection since 2015.
