About Triphala Churna

Triphala — also spelled Triphla, Trifla, or Tri Phala — means “three fruits” in Sanskrit: Tri (three) + Phala (fruits). The three fruits are Amalaki (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula), and Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica). What makes Triphala exceptional in classical Ayurveda is not the sum of its parts, but the synergy between them. Each fruit carries a distinct classical pharmacological profile: Amalaki is traditionally associated with Pitta balance and Rasayana nourishment; Haritaki with Vata balance and internal cleansing; and Bibhitaki with Kapha balance and respiratory wellness. Combined in the classical 1:1:1 ratio, Triphala is classified as Tridoshahara — one of the very few classical formulations described as beneficial for all three constitutional types (Prakriti). Riddhish Herbals Triphala Powder is prepared from all three pure fruits, without synthetic preservatives, GMOs, or added colours.

Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Charaka Samhita (Chikitsa Sthana 1.1) places Triphala among the foremost Rasayana formulations, describing it as appropriate for year-round use and suitable for all body types — a classification rarely bestowed on any single formulation. Sushruta Samhita further emphasises Triphala's role in digestive and detoxification traditions, positioning it as a Tridoshahara compound capable of supporting all three physiological forces simultaneously. The Ashtanga Hridayam provides one of the most detailed classical descriptions of Triphala's individual fruit properties, attributing to Amalaki its Madhura-vipaka (sweet post-digestive action), to Haritaki its Katu-vipaka (pungent post-digestive action), and to Bibhitaki its Laghu-Ruksha (light-dry) qualities — together creating a compound of pharmacological complexity not achievable with a single herb. Classical texts also describe Triphala's traditional Chakshushya (eye-supportive) association — an application noted in Ayurvedic literature for centuries.

Research and Scientific References

Triphala has been among the most studied classical Ayurvedic formulations in published phytopharmacological research. A comprehensive review published in the Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine (Peterson et al., 2017, University of New Mexico) examined the research literature on Triphala and noted study parameters consistent with its traditionally described digestive and antioxidant properties. CCRAS (Central Council for Research in Ayurvedic Sciences, Government of India) has published multiple monographs on Triphala as part of its systematic documentation of classical Ayurvedic formulations. Results observed in study conditions. Individual results may vary. Consult your Ayurvedic physician before use.
