About Bonguard Capsule and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Ayurveda describes the body through seven dhatus, or tissues, and places bone (Asthi dhatu) in close relationship with Vata dosha — Vata is said to reside in the Asthi. When Vata is steady and the tissues are well nourished, the frame stays strong and movement stays easy. Classical practice therefore pairs nourishing foods, such as milk, with herbs that keep Vata in balance and strengthen the Asthi and Sandhi (joints).
Bonguard is a proprietary formulation — a branded single-herb capsule rather than a recipe taken from one classical text — but its herb has a long classical history of its own:
- Asthishrinkhala (Cissus quadrangularis) takes its name from asthi (bone) and shrinkhala (chain) — the “chain of the bones”. Under the name Asthisamhara it is described in the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu (Guduchyadi Varga) as balancing Vata and Kapha, and classical texts describe it as sandhaniya. It is the herb Ayurvedic physicians associate most closely with the Asthi dhatu and with bone and joint strength.
- The plant is a fleshy, four-angled climbing vine of dry Indian scrubland. In Gujarat it is familiar as Hadsankal, and in parts of India its tender stems are also used in traditional home cooking.
- Milk is the vehicle in the dose. In classical practice milk is a nourishing (Brimhana) anupan, well suited to herbs taken to support the dhatus.
Because the right duration and the place of Bonguard alongside diet and daily routine depend on the individual, these are best decided by your physician.
