What is Kariyatu Churna?

Kariyatu Churna is dried Chirata, ground into a fine powder. In Gujarati we call it Kariyatu; in Hindi it is Chirayata; and in the old classical texts it is Kiratatikta — a name that simply means "utterly bitter." The pack carries one ingredient only — Swertia chirata, whole plant, 100%. Nothing else is added. This is one of the most respected bitter herbs in all of Ayurveda, and Gujarati families have kept it at home for generations.

Why Ayurveda values Kariyatu

In Ayurveda the bitter taste — Tikta — is valued for keeping the body light and fresh. Kariyatu is about as bitter as a herb gets; the old name Kiratatikta says exactly that. The classical text Bhavaprakasha Nighantu places it among the cooling herbs that calm Kapha and Pitta, and notes two simple qualities — Deepana, meaning it supports a good appetite, and Pachana, meaning it helps the body digest food. The classical texts also describe Kiratatikta in the context of Jwara (the old word for fever) and Krimi (worms), and as a herb that helps keep the blood clean. We share these only as part of the traditional written record, not as a promise of any result.

How Kariyatu Churna can fit into a normal day

You do not need to be unwell to take Kariyatu. In Gujarat it has long been the household "kaduvu" — the morning bitter that people reach for, especially when the seasons change, to feel fresh and to keep appetite and digestion in good order. A small pinch in warm water first thing in the morning is the traditional way. The taste is genuinely bitter, and that bitterness is simply the herb itself — many people add a little honey, or take it as advised, to make it easier. It suits grown men and women who want one honest, single-herb bitter powder, with no mixing and no guesswork.

What is inside

  • Chirata / Kariyatu (Swertia chirata) — whole plant — 100%

No fillers. No colour. No extra ingredients. Just Kariyatu, exactly as the pack says.

Has it been studied?

Yes. Chirata has been studied by scientists for many years. A detailed review looked at its long history of traditional use and the natural bitter compounds inside it, such as amarogentin — one of the most bitter natural substances known (Kumar & Van Staden, 2016, Frontiers in Pharmacology). A study like this is not a promise of any result — it simply shows the plant has been looked at carefully. Always speak with your physician before you start.

How to take it

Take it the way your Ayurvedic doctor advises. A common amount is a small pinch up to about half a teaspoon (roughly 1–2 g) in warm water, once or twice a day. Because Kariyatu is extremely bitter, it is best to begin with a very small quantity and increase slowly. A little honey can make it easier to take.

Safety

Use under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic doctor. Talk to your doctor first if you are pregnant, feeding a baby, taking any medicine, or already under treatment for any condition — and do not stop or change any medicine you are already on. Keep away from children. Results are different for every person.

Storage

Keep it in a cool, dry place, away from sunlight and moisture. Close the pack tightly after every use.

What exactly is Kariyatu?

Kariyatu is the Gujarati name for Chirata, the herb Swertia chirata. In Sanskrit it is Kiratatikta, which means "utterly bitter." Here the whole plant is simply dried and powdered into a fine churna.

What are its other names?

Kariyatu or Kariyatun (Gujarati); Chirayata, Chirata or Chiraita (Hindi); Kiratatikta, Bhunimba or Kirata (Sanskrit); Kaduchiraita (Marathi); Nalebevu (Kannada); Chirata or Chiretta in English. People also spell it Chirayita or Chireta.

Why is it so bitter, and how do I take it?

Chirata is naturally one of the most bitter herbs there is — that strong taste is the herb itself. Start with a very small pinch in warm water, and add a little honey if you wish. Increase the amount slowly as you get used to it.

How is Riddhish Herbals Kariyatu Churna different from other brands?

It is a single-ingredient, label-verified powder (Swertia chirata, whole plant, 100%) presented with honest classical-text references rather than tall claims, made in a GMP-, ISO 9001:2015- and HACCP-certified facility and quality-checked by Riddhish Herbals.

Is it in stock?

Yes — it is available now at riddhishherbals.com with delivery all over India, and a proper bill comes with every order.

How do I store it?

Keep it cool and dry, away from sunlight, and close the pack well after each use.

Has Swertia chirata been studied scientifically?

Yes. A detailed review summarised its traditional uses and its bitter natural compounds, such as amarogentin (Kumar & Van Staden, 2016, Frontiers in Pharmacology). Such research is not a treatment claim, and you should consult your physician before use.
