About Bhringraj and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Few herbs carry a name as telling as this one. Bhringaraja is often rendered “king of the bees”, and its Sanskrit synonym Kesharaja, “king of the hair”, says plainly why Ayurveda has valued it for so long. The small white-flowered plant is found in damp ground across India, and the whole plant — not only the leaf — is used in churna form. In Gujarat it is commonly known as Bhangro.
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu (Guduchyadi Varga) describes Bhringraj as Keshya (good for the hair) and Tvachya (good for the skin), and as pacifying Kapha and Vata. It is central to many classical hair oils and hair packs. Its classical properties are summarised below:
- Rasa (taste): Katu (pungent), Tikta (bitter).
- Guna (qualities): Laghu (light), Ruksha (dry).
- Virya (potency): Ushna (warming).
- Vipaka (post-digestive effect): Katu (pungent).
- Dosha: traditionally regarded as balancing Kapha and Vata.
- Karma (traditional actions): Keshya (hair care) and Tvachya (skin care).
In Indian homes, Bhringraj powder has long been part of the weekly hair routine: mixed into a paste for a scalp pack, or warmed in coconut or sesame oil before a head massage. It sits naturally alongside Amla and Shikakai in traditional hair-care blends.
