Dashamoola, literally "ten roots", is one of the best-known root groups in Ayurveda. It joins two classical groups of five: the Laghu Panchamoola, the five lesser roots (Shalparni, Prushnparni, Bruhati, Kantkari and Gokshur), and the Brihat Panchamoola, the five greater roots (Bilva, Agnimanth, Shyonak, Gambhari and Patla). The Sushruta Samhita (Sutrasthana, chapter 38) lists both Panchamoolas among its classical groups of dravyas, and the later texts bring them together as Dashamoola.
Dashmool Kwath is the Kashaya-kalpana (decoction-type) form of this group. Kashaya is one of the five basic dosage forms of Ayurveda, and Dashamoola is prepared in many classical forms, from Kwath and Taila to Ghrita and Arishta. How to Use
Dose: 3 to 6 teaspoons with equal water, twice a day after meals, or as directed by the physician.
- Measure: one teaspoon is about 5 ml, so 3 to 6 teaspoons is about 15 to 30 ml.
- Dilute: mix with an equal quantity of water before drinking.
- Timing: twice a day, after meals.
