Indigo (Nili) Powder is pure dried leaf of Indigofera tinctoria (100%) — the classical Nili, India's botanical source of natural brown-to-black hair colour. No ammonia, no PPD, no metallic salts, no synthetic fragrance, no preservatives.
Indigo — known across India as Nili, Neel or Neeli — is the finely milled dried leaf of Indigofera tinctoria, one of the world's oldest natural dye plants. This is a single-ingredient powder: pure leaf, nothing else. In its dry form the powder is an earthy green; the deep blue-black it is prized for appears only when it meets water and air on the hair, through a natural reaction. That is what makes it a true botanical colourant rather than a chemical one. Riddhish Herbals has supplied genuine, bill-backed Ayurvedic products from Gujarat since 2015.
About Indigo (Nili) Powder
For centuries, Nili has been the partner herb to henna in India's natural hair-care tradition. Henna alone gives warm red-brown tones; indigo is what carries the colour through to brown and black. The name Nili comes from the Sanskrit word for blue, and the herb appears again and again in classical Ayurvedic hair formulations — most famously the medicated oil Neelibhringadi Taila. At Riddhish Herbals this is a pure single-ingredient product: only dried, powdered indigo leaf, with nothing added.
Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
In the classical Nighantus, Nili is counted among the Keshya dravyas — the botanicals valued for the colour and care of hair. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu places Nili in the Guduchyadi varga and records it as Tikta (bitter) in rasa, traditionally associated with pacifying Kapha and Pitta. One of its classical Sanskrit synonyms is Ranjani — literally "the one that colours" — a direct nod to its long-documented role in Kesha Ranjana, the natural darkening of hair, and in the care of Akala Palitya, the Sanskrit term for premature greying. Nili is a principal ingredient of the time-honoured formulation Neelibhringadi Taila, referenced in Kerala and South Indian Ayurvedic hair traditions for scalp nourishment. The deep colour is no accident of tradition: the leaf carries indican, a precursor that converts to indigotin, the blue pigment that gives the herb both its name and its purpose.

Research & Scientific References
The colouring action of indigo comes from indican, a glucoside in the leaf that converts through indoxyl to indigotin (indigo blue) — the molecule that bonds to the hair surface and gives the characteristic blue-black tone. A peer-reviewed phytochemical evaluation of Indigofera tinctoria leaf characterised its constituents, including flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides and terpenoids, and noted the leaf's low toxicity. Findings described in research and traditional settings. Individual colour results vary by natural hair colour, porosity and application time. For external use only.
How to Use
Two-step method (for deep black): Apply henna paste first and leave 1–2 hours, then rinse and dry. Mix indigo powder with lukewarm water to a smooth, yoghurt-thick paste and apply immediately to the henna-treated hair. Leave 45–60 minutes, then rinse with plain water only.
One-step method (for dark brown): Mix henna and indigo powder together in your chosen ratio with lukewarm water, apply, leave 1–2 hours and rinse thoroughly.
Ratio guide for colour variation:
Black — apply henna first, then indigo separately.
Dark brown — 25% henna + 75% indigo.
Brown — 50% henna + 50% indigo.
Reddish brown — 75% henna + 25% indigo.
Carrier (anupan): plain lukewarm water; a small pinch of salt is traditionally added in the two-step method to improve colour uptake. Always use a ceramic or plastic bowl — never metal. For external use only; do not ingest.
Who Can Use It
Suitable for adults — men and women — who wish to colour hair naturally by botanical methods. A 24-hour patch test on inner-arm skin is recommended before first use. Those with known plant allergies, a sensitive scalp or an existing skin condition should consult a physician before use. Pregnant and lactating women may use indigo externally but may wish to consult their physician first. Not intended for children. Not for internal use.
Safety Information
For external use only. Conduct a patch test 24 hours before full application. Avoid contact with eyes and broken or irritated skin. If redness, irritation or discomfort develops, discontinue use and rinse with water. This is a botanical hair-care powder, not a medicine. Colour results vary by natural hair colour, porosity, ratio and contact time — individual results will differ. Keep out of reach of children. Results may vary from person to person.
Storage
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, heat and moisture. Keep the pack tightly sealed after every use. Use within 9 months of the manufacture date for best colour results. Do not refrigerate.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Nili / Indigo powder?
Nili is the classical Sanskrit and Hindi name for Indigofera tinctoria, the Indian indigo plant. Indigo powder is its dried, finely ground leaf. It has been used in Ayurvedic hair traditions for centuries and is a classical ingredient in formulations such as Neelibhringadi Taila. On hair it develops a brown-to-black tone through indigotin, a natural pigment formed from the leaf's indican.
Is this indigo powder AYUSH or GMP certified?
This is a Riddhish Herbals own-brand powder, marketed by Riddhish Herbals and manufactured by Panchamrut Herbals (Mfg. Lic. GA/1762) in a facility holding GMP, ISO 9001:2015 and HACCP certifications. Certification marks printed on the pack are batch-specific — check the physical label or contact us for the current status of your batch.
Can I use this without professional guidance?
Indigo is a traditional botanical hair colourant for external use and does not require medical guidance for general hair colour use. A 24-hour patch test is strongly recommended. If you have a scalp condition, known plant allergies, or are pregnant, consult your physician first.
What are the alternate names for this product?
Indigo powder is also called Nili, Neeli, Neel, Neelini, Ranjani (Sanskrit), Nil Patta, Neel Patti, Avuri (Tamil), Aviri (Telugu), Amari (Malayalam), Black Henna Powder and Indian Indigo Powder. Botanically it is Indigofera tinctoria Linn. See the Regional Names table below.
Can I use indigo powder alone without henna?
Indigo applied alone to uncoloured hair usually gives a blue-black or greyish result rather than a true black. For rich, natural-looking black, traditional practice recommends the two-step method — henna first, then indigo — because henna lays down a warm base that indigo then deepens.
How do I get black instead of a greenish tint?
A greenish or patchy result almost always means the indigo was used alone or rinsed too soon. Use henna first (rinse and dry), then apply fresh indigo paste and leave it the full 45–60 minutes. Mixing the indigo paste fresh each time and avoiding metal bowls also helps the colour develop evenly.
How is Riddhish Herbals different from other brands?
Riddhish Herbals has been a trusted Ayurvedic retailer in Gujarat since 2015 — genuine products, a bill on every purchase, and doctor-guided product selection. This indigo is single-herb, label-verified pure leaf powder with no fillers, backed by classical references and a named manufacturing licence.
Has Indigofera tinctoria been studied scientifically?
Indigo's colouring activity is attributed to indican, which converts to indigotin and bonds to the hair surface. A peer-reviewed phytochemical study in Ancient Science of Life (Verma & Suresh, 2002; PMID 22557060) characterised the leaf's constituents — flavonoids, alkaloids, glycosides and terpenoids — and noted its low toxicity. Findings described under research and traditional settings; individual results vary.
