About Jambu and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Jambu is the Sanskrit and Gujarati name for the Jamun tree, Syzygium cumini, whose deep-purple fruit ripens across India at the start of the monsoon. Once the fruit is eaten, the hard seed inside is dried and ground, and it is this seed that goes into Jambu Powder. In Sanskrit the tree is also called Mahaphala, and in English the Java plum or black plum.
Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes Jambu in the Amradi Phala Varga as Grahi and Ruksha, and as pacifying Kapha and Pitta. The classical properties of the seed are summarised below:
