Yastimadhu Powder (Yashtimadhu Churna) by Riddhish Herbals is a single-herb Ayurvedic powder of licorice root, Glycyrrhiza glabra (Root), 100%, in a 100 g pack. Known as Mulethi in Hindi and Jethimadh in Gujarati, Yashtimadhu is a sweet, cooling root traditionally used in Ayurveda for throat and voice comfort, digestive comfort and in skin and hair packs. Dose: As directed by the Ayurvedic physician. Supplied by Riddhish Herbals, Gujarat’s Ayurvedic store since 2015, with a bill on every order.

About Yastimadhu and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Yashtimadhu means “sweet stick”, a fitting name for the woody root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, licorice. It is Mulethi in Hindi and Jethimadh in Gujarati, and in Sanskrit it is also called Madhuka. Few roots are quoted as often in the classical texts: it appears in the Charaka Samhita, the Sushruta Samhita, the Ashtanga Hridaya and the Bhavaprakasha Nighantu, and it is a familiar herb in Gujarati kitchens and household remedies.

Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana, Chapter 4) places Madhuka in several of its fifty Mahakashaya groups, including Kanthya, the herbs beneficial to the throat and voice, and Jivaniya, the herbs that nourish and sustain. Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes Yashtimadhu in the Haritakyadi Varga. Its classical properties are summarised below:

  • Rasa (taste): Madhura (sweet).
  • Guna (qualities): Guru (heavy), Snigdha (unctuous).
  • Virya (potency): Sheeta (cooling).
  • Vipaka (post-digestive effect): Madhura (sweet).
  • Dosha: traditionally regarded as pacifying Vata and Pitta.
  • Karma (traditional actions): Kanthya and Svarya (beneficial to the throat and voice), Keshya (good for the hair) and Balya (strengthening).

Because it is sweet, unctuous and cooling, Ayurveda reads Yashtimadhu as a soothing herb, which is why it is matched to Vata and Pitta. In Gujarati homes a small piece of Jethimadh root, or a pinch of its powder with honey, has long been a household way to keep the throat and voice comfortable, and the powder is a common addition to herbal face and hair packs.
