About Sunth Powder (Dry Ginger)

Sunth is the dried, milled rhizome of ginger — Zingiber officinale — sold here as a single-herb powder: 100% dried ginger, nothing added. Each pack holds 50g of finely ground rhizome.

Fresh ginger is called Ardraka. Once it is cleaned, sun-dried and ground, it becomes Sunth — also written Soonth, Saunth or Sonth, and known in Sanskrit as Shunthi. It is one of the most familiar herbs in any Indian kitchen or Ayurvedic pharmacy, valued as much for the warmth it brings to a cup of tea as for its long standing in classical literature. Riddhish Herbals has supplied genuine, bill-backed Ayurvedic herbs from Gujarat since 2015.

In short: Sunth (Sunthi Churna) is 100% dried ginger root powder, Zingiber officinale. In Ayurveda it is classically described as a Deepana–Pachana herb — one that kindles digestive fire and supports comfortable digestion — and is traditionally valued for balancing Kapha and Vata. Classical texts honour it as Mahaushadha, "the great medicine."

Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Few herbs carry the standing that Shunthi does in classical literature. The Bhavaprakasha Nighantu (Haritakyadi Varga) describes its pungent taste (katu rasa), hot potency (ushna virya) and sweet post-digestive effect (madhura vipaka), alongside its Deepana and Pachana qualities. Ayurvedic tradition holds it in such regard that it is named Mahaushadha — the great medicine — and Vishvabheshaja, "the universal remedy."

Classical formulations such as Shunthi Ghrita and numerous Pachana (digestive) decoctions place dried ginger at their centre, and it is the lead pungent in the well-known Trikatu group. As traditionally described in Ayurvedic texts, Sunthi is valued for balancing Kapha and Vata and for supporting seasonal wellbeing when taken thoughtfully as part of a daily routine.

Research and Scientific References

Dried ginger has been the subject of published clinical research exploring its traditionally recognised digestive qualities. A systematic review of clinical trials reported that ginger taken in divided daily amounts was associated with relief of nausea and general digestive comfort in adult subjects under study conditions (Nikkhah Bodagh et al., 2019 — Food Science & Nutrition, 7(1):96–108; PMCID PMC6341159). A more recent double-blind, placebo-controlled trial examined standardised ginger root powder and gastrointestinal symptoms in healthy adults (Crichton et al., 2023 — Journal of Nutrition, 153:3193–3206).

Results were observed under study conditions and individual results may vary. Please consult your Ayurvedic physician before use.

How to Use

As directed by your Ayurvedic physician. Traditionally, ¼ to ½ teaspoon (roughly 1–3g) of Sunth Powder is taken once or twice daily, stirred into warm water, herbal tea or milk.

Anupan (vehicle): warm water is the everyday choice; a little honey makes a warming morning drink. Sunth is also used as a culinary spice in teas, soups and household decoctions.

Who Can Use It

Suitable for most adults as part of a balanced daily routine and as a kitchen spice. If you are pregnant, lactating, taking any medication (especially blood-thinning medicines), or managing any health condition, consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before regular use. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety Information

Use in moderation as part of a balanced routine. Excessive intake of pungent, heating herbs may not suit those prone to acidity or high Pitta. Consult a qualified Ayurvedic physician before use if pregnant, lactating, on medication, or managing any health condition. Results may vary from person to person.

Storage

Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight. Reseal the pack after each use and keep in an airtight container to preserve aroma and potency.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this product AYUSH or GMP certified?

Sunth Powder is manufactured for Riddhish Herbals in a GMP-, ISO 9001:2015- and HACCP-certified facility (Mfg. Lic. GA/1762). These are facility quality certifications. The pack also carries the manufacturing licence number for traceability.

Can I take Sunth Powder without consulting a doctor?

As a single culinary herb, dry ginger is widely used in everyday cooking and tea. For regular wellness use — and always if you are pregnant, lactating, on medication or managing a health condition — it is best to use it under the guidance of a qualified Ayurvedic physician.

What is Sunth (Sunthi)?

Sunth is dried, ground ginger rhizome (Zingiber officinale). In Sanskrit it is Shunthi; fresh ginger is Ardraka. Drying concentrates its warming, pungent character, which is why Ayurveda treats dry ginger differently from fresh.

What are the other names for Sunth?

Also known as Sonth, Soonth, Saunth, Sunthi, Shunthi, Nagara, Vishvabheshaja, Sukku (Tamil), Chukku (Malayalam), Sonti (Telugu) and Zanjabeel (Urdu). See the Regional Names table above.

How is Riddhish Sunth different from other brands?

It is a single-herb, label-verified powder — 100% dried ginger with nothing added — backed by a classical reference (Bhavaprakasha Nighantu) and honest, compliant wording. You receive genuine product with a proper bill from a store operating since 2015.

What is the recommended anupan (vehicle)?

Warm water is the classic everyday anupan. A little honey turns it into a warming morning drink. It also blends into tea, milk, soups and decoctions.

How should I store Sunth Powder?

Keep it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, in an airtight container, resealed after each use to preserve aroma and potency.

Has ginger been studied scientifically?

Yes. Dried ginger (Zingiber officinale) has been examined in peer-reviewed clinical research for its traditionally recognised digestive qualities — for example a 2019 systematic review of clinical trials (Nikkhah Bodagh et al., Food Science & Nutrition) and a 2023 placebo-controlled trial of ginger root powder in healthy adults (Crichton et al., Journal of Nutrition). Results were observed under study conditions; individual results may vary.

Is Sunth Powder available at Riddhish Herbals?

Yes — it is in stock at riddhishherbals.com and at our Gujarat retail stores, with pan-India delivery and a proper bill.
