Kantakari Avaleha (100 g) is an Ayurvedic classical medicine (Reference: AFI) marketed by Therachem Herbals and manufactured by Vedant Pharma, Bhadam. It is an Avaleha — a classical semi-solid preparation taken by licking — led by Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum), a herb the classical texts count among the Kasahara dravyas, and supported by Trikatu, Bharangi, Karkatshringi, Guduchi, Chitrak, Rasna, Shati and Vansalochan in a base of cow ghee, sesame oil and Madhu. In the classical tradition it is used for respiratory and throat comfort and Kapha-Vata balance. Dose: ½–1 tola (6–12 g), with warm water or warm milk as Anupan. Take as directed by your physician. Supplied by Riddhish Herbals, Gujarat's Ayurvedic store since 2015, with a bill on every order.

About Kantakari Avaleha and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance

Ayurveda understands the comfort of the throat and chest through the Pranavaha srotas, the channels that carry Prana, and through the balance of Kapha and Vata. When Kapha settles in the chest and throat and Vata pushes against it, the classical texts describe Kasa — cough — and they group the herbs traditionally used for cough comfort as Kasahara dravyas. The Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana, chapter 4) names Kantakarika among the ten Kasahara herbs.

Kantakari Avaleha is a classical formulation (Reference: AFI) built around that herb, and the Avaleha format is part of its design: a decoction of the herbs is cooked down with cow ghee and sesame oil into a thick, lickable preparation, finished with Madhu and fine powders once cool. The supporting herbs follow classical groupings:

  • Kantakari (Solanum xanthocarpum) is the lead herb at 43.85% — one of the five herbs of Laghu Panchamula within Dashamula, described in the Nighantus as pungent and bitter, warm in potency and balancing to Kapha and Vata.
  • Trikatu — Shunthi, Maricha and Pippali — is the classical trio of pungent spices traditionally used to support Agni and to balance Kapha. Pippali appears twice in the formula, at 0.43% and again at 1.75%.
  • Bharangi (Clerodendrum serratum) and Karkatshringi (Pistacia integerrima) are classical herbs long used in Ayurvedic formulas for throat and chest comfort.
  • Chavya and Chitrak are warming, pungent herbs of the Pippalyadi group, classically valued as Deepana-Pachana for digestion.
  • Guduchi, Nagarmotha, Dhanvayas, Rasna and Shati round out the herbal part of the formula; Shati (Kapur Kachri) is an aromatic rhizome traditionally included in Kapha-balancing preparations.
  • Vansalochan (Bambusa arundinacea, bamboo manna) is a traditional ingredient of classical Avaleha and churna preparations for the throat and chest.
  • Goghrita, Til Taila and Madhu — cow ghee, sesame oil and honey — form the classical Avaleha base that carries the herbs.

Because Kantakari Avaleha is a multi-ingredient classical medicine, whether it suits you, and for how long to take it, is best decided by your Ayurvedic physician.

How to Use

Dose: ½–1 tola (6–12 g), with warm water or warm milk as Anupan. Take as directed by your physician.

Kantakari Avaleha is taken by mouth. In traditional practice, an Avaleha is licked slowly from a clean spoon and followed by the warm Anupan, warm water or warm milk, which classical practice regards as the carrier that helps the preparation settle. Follow your physician's advice on frequency and duration over any general guidance.
