About Kumkumadi Oil and Its Traditional Ayurvedic Importance
Kumkumadi Taila is one of the best-known names in Ayurvedic skin care. It is named after its lead dravya, Kumkuma (saffron), and the formulation is described in the classical text Bhaishajya Ratnavali. Panchamrut Herbals prepares this Kumkumadi Oil to its own composition, set out in full below: twenty-six dravyas cooked into sesame oil together with cow milk.
It is made by Sneha Kalpana, the classical method for medicated oils, in which herbs are cooked into the oil with a liquid medium until the liquid has evaporated, leaving the oil carrying the herbs' qualities. Sesame oil is the traditional base. Charaka Samhita (Sutrasthana) ranks Tila Taila first among oils, and it remains the standard vehicle for Abhyanga, the Ayurvedic practice of oil application and massage.
A few of the formula's dravyas, as Bhavaprakasha Nighantu describes them:
- Kumkuma (Kesar, saffron): Katu and Tikta in taste, Snigdha (unctuous), and described as balancing all three doshas.
- Chandana (Swet Chandan, sandalwood): Sheeta (cooling), Tikta and Madhura in taste, and pacifying to Pitta. It is one of the most traditional fragrant woods in Indian skin care.
- Manjishtha (Majith): Madhura, Tikta and Kashaya in taste, and a long-standing herb of Ayurvedic skin care.
- Yashtimadhu (Jethimadh, licorice): Madhura in taste, Sheeta and Snigdha, soothing and pacifying to Vata and Pitta.
- Haridra (Haldi, turmeric): Tikta and Katu in taste and Ushna in potency, familiar in Indian homes as the herb of the traditional ubtan.
Fragrant woods and roots such as Agru, Usir, Padmak and Rakta Chandan, flowers such as Kamal, Nagkesar, Kesuda and Chameli, and Lodhra, Daru Haldi and Priyangu make up the rest of the formula.
